Virginia became a member of the national WIDA consortium and adopted their English Language Proficiency (ELD) standards. Richmond County Public Schools continues to work to implement the standards effectively in all classrooms with ELL students.
The WIDA ELP standards are divided into five standards: Social and Instructional Language; the Language of Language Arts; the Language of Mathematics; the Language of Science; and the Language of Social Studies. These standards are further divided into grade level clusters: pre-K/K; 1-2; 3-5; 6-8; and 9-12. For basic information, here is the RCPS PowerPoint link.
The WIDA ELD standards are available for free via download from the WIDA website, and the 2007 standards have been distributed to teachers. A training overview on these standards is also provided.
The Virginia Department of Education provides instructional videos for each of the five WIDA strands. The videos are short and are informative.
Additional information on instruction for ELLs is available through PD360. If you are having problems accessing your PD360 account, please contact Heaven Ball or Sarah Schmidt. There are many videos available including those through the program: Helping Students with Limited English Skills for Elementary and Secondary teachers.
The ESL teacher is also a great resource for improving instruction for ELL students. Please feel free to contact her for assistance.
