Press Release - Superintendent

At its scheduled meeting on July 8, 2020, the Richmond County School Board accepted the "notice to retire" of James "Greg" Smith Ed.D. effective on January 29, 2021.  The School Board wishes Dr. Smith a very happy retirement and commendations on his leadership in Richmond County since his tenure began on July 1, 2012.

A portion of Dr. Smith's letter to the School Board is shared below:

"It is with a heavy heart and following much thought that I end my career as an educator after 35 years of serving as a Teacher, Coach, Assistant Principal, Principal, Central Office Administrator, and Superintendent.

However, I do so following one of the best experiences of my life as the leader and superintendent of the Richmond County Schools. While we experienced many challenges, we also experienced many successes, which required each of us to reach a little further, dedicate a little more, and see a little more clearly for the betterment of our students.

I can say with confidence how fortunate I have been to be employed by the Richmond County School Board. When I began my tenure, I could not have imagined the strong will, dedication and strength of each Board member to uphold their oath and responsibilities. Further, I could not have anticipated the depth of trust related to me to lead and guide this school division as a professional educator. It is the partnership of the superintendent and School Board that propels the direction and mission of the division. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each Board member and notably, Mr. Brown for his dedication as the School Board Chairman. Collectively, it has been your tireless efforts and vision as a Board, which has greatly benefitted the children of Richmond County.

As a school division, we are blessed with an excellent staff, students and families; they are the foundation of this division and will remain the core of our successes. I cannot overstate their value or abilities to progress and move this division forward because it is they, who have no limitations."

The schedule for a new superintendent search will be announced at the August 12, 2020 School Board Meeting.
